Melting powder

For abrasion and cleaning when melting gold and silver alloys.

• Usual quantity for melting:
  approx. 1 part melting powder : 1 part metal residue (dross)

When rubbed off, the precious metal, gold and silver-containing alloys, is subjected to an oxidising melting process. The base metals are transformed into oxides, but the precious metals remain unchanged. The metal obtained in this way is then available as working gold or silver.

• Mix the metal residues and/or filings with the melting powder and fill the clay crucible with the metal/melting powder mixture.
• The clay crucible should only be filled to a maximum of approx. 2/3 of its height, as the melting powder swells when heated and can leak out of the crucible.
• During the melting process, the cleaned metal regulus collects at the bottom of the crucible and is poured into a block mould.

Note:

• All materials must be thoroughly annealed and iron removed (demagnetised) before melting
• When using this melting powder, clay crucibles (Hessian crucibles) must always be used.
