For which applications must calibrated scales be used?
According to EU Directive 2014/31/EU, scales must be officially conformity assessed (“verified”) if they are used as follows:
- In the course of trade, when the price of a good is determined by weighing.
- In the manufacture of medicinal products in pharmacies and for analyses in medical and pharmaceutical laboratories.
- For official purposes.
- In the manufacture of prepackages.
- In medicine.
Conformity assessment (calibration) is an official regulation and serves to protect consumers. Only scales whose type approval bears the metrology mark M can be calibrated, according to the new terminology “conformity-assessed”.
Where must the initial calibration be done?
- The initial calibration of the scales must be carried out at the manufacturer's premises before delivery!
- Only scales that have been factory-calibrated before delivery can be recalibrated later by your local verification office after the factory calibration has expired!
- Each scale is tested at the factory and given a conformity mark. This confirms their accuracy within the permissible tolerances.
- The scope of the EU factory verification covers all member states of the EU (European Union).
- The initial verification of scales is valid for 24 months. The period of 24 months is only measured from the end of the calendar year in which the scales were last verified.
Example: The initial verification took place sometime in 2023, then the verification is valid until 31.12.2025
- Subsequent verification after delivery of the scale is not possible!
If you want to use the scale for legal-for-trade applications immediately or at some point in the future, we recommend that you always order legal-for-trade scales including factory initial calibration. You can then register this scale at any time for recalibration at your local calibration office and have it recalibrated. This also increases the resale value of the scales, as the calibration option is retained for the new owner at the new location, too!
